Balancing Wobbly Ceiling Fans Using Magnets

Google is great for many things including ideas to fix problems you hadn’t thought of before. The challenge is usually looking for suggested parts required for the fix which often means (when you know your local hardware stores do not have them) looking online and patiently waiting for them to arrive. I was bothered by the constantly swaying and needed to do something — then I remembered I bought some strong magnets from Daiso and as it turned out, these magnets made the job so much easier. Although the magnets were intended to be a temporary fix, I think they are staying on much longer, and I’m lucky I have fans with metal blades.

Caution: Make sure you use strong magnets or risk injury or damage if one dislodges when fan is running at higher speed. Typically for me, I run mine at speed setting no. 2 which is more than enough cooling.

Power Outage and Resume Notifier

If you’ve ever had to be away from home for an extended period of time with no one else staying there, the greatest fear besides having the house broken into is a power outage that can potentially ruin everything that’s inside your refrigerator. A temporary power failure that doesn’t trip the main circuit breaker is not too bad since when the power resumes, power to the fridge is restored automatically.

My home recently suffered one such unfortunate incident. It was during my son’s mid semester break from uni and he left a reasonably stocked fridge to stay with us. I have two IP cams at the house that I check every now and then, both working until the day we visited to spend a long weekend holiday there. There was no power and the circuit breaker had tripped leaving the whole house without power — the fridge had been left without power long enough that when we got there the freezer was warm and an overpowering stench (from thawed meat and other food items) quickly permeated the kitchen and living room.

Two days on my wife and I, after doing everything we could to deodorize every nook and cranny of the fridge, were still looking for a way to prevent a re-occurrence. At first this looked pretty convincing (we were also desperate):

It didn’t take long to figure out that the long term costs involved don’t quite make sense. Later that week, I started looking for alternatives and came across two promising Android apps and settled on Power Failure Monitor. I installed the app on a retired Samsung Galaxy S3 and connected to the home Wi-Fi (without a SIM card). Read how I got everything setup and working beautifully — without needlessly spending a lot of money on this.

Without a SIM card the phone is unable to directly send SMS alerts. To address that, I use a Chrome Extension Gmail SMS Alerts to automatically (service is free) recognize the emails sent by Power Failure Monitor app and convert that to an SMS text message.

Drop me a line if you have found this solution useful.

Bayan Atuh Trail Ultra 2018

The first time my family and I traveled to Kuching was in March 2017,  purpose was to visit a university that had accepted my son’s application for a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering. Unfortunately for me, I had a bad sore through and was running an uncomfortable fever during the trip, food wasn’t particularly exciting in my condition and walkabouts in the city on a sunny day, well, you know how the rest of the day went.

Fast forward a year to April 2018, I signed up for the Bayan Atuh Trail Ultra 50K in Kuching organised by Grit Event Management, the same weekend as Cameron Ultra 2018. I had no expectations of how the event would turn out for me, my only qualifications (similar distance and total ascent) were having previously completed TMBT 50K in 2016/2017, Cameron Ultra 55K in 2017 and BUTM 2018 50K.

I did however have one concern and that exactly a year ago, during Cameron Ultra, I suffered searing knee pain on both legs after the 15km mark only to struggle the remaining 36km with something I later learned was Iliotibial band syndrome, commonly referred to as ITBS. I had logged 7,700m of climbs that month without sufficient rest in between.

Visit Bayan Atuh Trail Ultra’s official Facebook page for many more race day photos to wet your appetite for their 2019 edition. 50K flagged-off in the dark and also finished the same so I relied on the photo sets from various photographers to see what I had missed that day.

15 hours and close to 50km later at Bayan Atuh Trail Ultra, my total climb for July 2018 came to 9,100m (1,400m more than the previous year), and I was relieved and delighted at the same time to have finished the grueling race with no injury other than much needed rest to make up for how early we began our journey from the hotel to the jetty to the start line.

Because this was Grit’s first ultra trail event, curiosities arose as to whether this 50K was easier or tougher than TMBT’s 50k. I made the comparison purely for fun as we all know numbers alone only provide one side of a race course’s story — the other side needs to be lived out however challenging it becomes in reality.

Altra Lone Peak 4.0

This is not a Lone Peak 4.0 review, the shoes have just arrived from Running Warehouse and it came easily two sizes up from my current Lone Peak 3.5. To begin with the 3.5 in size 12 US isn’t all that spacious, so I was under the impression (from several reviews) that the LP 4.0 would run small so naturally getting one size up would be quite safe. Little did I realize that the 4.0 actually runs bigger so now I have them in what appears to be two sizes up — to say the toe box has a lot of wriggle room would be quite the understatement. The immediate thing I liked about the 4.0 is how soft and comfortable the front is, also very wide like how I remember the Superior 2.0 is — and the narrower midfoot and heel that keeps the foot in place.

Sungai Liang Trail Run 2018

#SgLiangTrail2018 was the race that brought the outdoor loving community together. More than that, it also brought the country’s strong, experienced and elite runners to this race venue following a series of organizer led course recces. The hills and trails in Sungai Liang are regular training grounds for Belait based runners and have over the years produced many 50K to 100K ultra trail marathon finishers. Kampong Sungai Liang is one of my favourite venues to hike and in particularly heat train as there is very little tree cover throughout the course.

One of two most anticipated local trail races in Brunei that had been postponed due to Covid-19 but has been given the green light to proceed following the country’s Level 4 de-escalation to allow group activities. This activity on Strava.

Pictures from an official course recce weeks before the date of the time trial was announced.
Shortly after the recce, I took my daughter and friends (neither are race participants) for a ‘test drive’ of the course runners are expected to complete in 3 hours. Leisurely paced and a lot more scenic photos here.

Garmin Enduro Settings To Change For Elevation Accuracy

Garmin Enduro

Right out of the box, the Garmin Enduro reports overly generous total elevation gain numbers. I prefer my GPS watch to be accurate not generous. Before the Enduro I had been using the Fenix 3 HR for a number of years and its accuracy has been time-tested against so many ultra trail races I’ve ever been in. So I have a solid reference to compare the Enduro with. With that said, I suggest making the following changes:

Long Press MENU button | Settings | System | Data Recording | Every Second

Long Press MENU button | Settings | Sensor & Accessories | Altimeter | Auto Cal. | During Activity: OFF | Not During Activity: OFF

Long Press MENU button | Settings | Sensor & Accessories | Barometer | Watch Mode | Barometer (Default: Auto). I’ve found Auto jacks up elevation gain a lot and until a future firmware addresses this problem, the only way is to force Watch Mode to Barometer (more info from Garmin)

Before starting an activity, calibrate your Altimeter using DEM where DEM is supported. Otherwise use GPS (less accurate)

Garmin Enduro Battery Performance Review

From 100% full charge over a 32-day period, I used the Enduro in 18 combined Trail Run and Ride activities totalling 284km in 34:07:35 with 26% charge left enough to last another 33 days in watch mode or 19 hours of activity time. All activities in full GPS mode (Every Second Recording, GPS+GLONASS or GPS+GALILEO and Heart Rate). There’s more than enough battery life to handle more than a 100-miler event.

Stock functions removed or disabled include Activity Tracking, Pulse Oximeter, Widgets (ABC, Respiration, Stress, Body Battery, Hydration), Notifications, Bluetooth (turned on only for activity syncing), Watch face is stock Garmin.

Trail Running and Cycling with the Under Armour Gen 2 Sportsmask

Although masks aren’t required during exercise, I’m not taking any chances when I am trail running and cycling. We’re breathing harder than usual when we exercise—more so during intense workouts—a COVID-19 positive individual spreads the virus through exhaled aerosol particles. I get it, a mask often makes breathing more laboured and ruins the pleasure of exercising, I used to wear a fabric mask that would start off ok but as soon as it gets wet from sweat, the mask would completely collapse making breathing close to impossible.

With the Under Armour Sportsmask (I’ve never used the Gen 1) I was able to keep my mask on for the entire duration of my workout except when I took it off to hydrate or chew on an energy bar. At no time did I feel uncomfortable even during intense uphill runs that I had to rip off the mask to breathe. Even when the piece is completely soaked with sweat, I was still breathing OK. I haven’t tested this mask in the rain and I think there’s a reason the outer shell is waterproof.

There is one caveat I think that’s not mentioned in the reviews that I’ve read about this mask. So far I have feedback from two friends who found breathing difficulties during a hike and mountain biking (separate occasions) when they were doing climbs and breathing was more laboured. Being unscientific here, I think that has to do with their normally low VO2max. I have a VO2max of 52 according to my Garmin Enduro and a Resting Heart Rate of 47.

Trail Running with the Insta360 X3

With zero experience in shooting videos, never owned a GoPro before much less a 360° camera, I took the plunge with the Insta360 X3 for a once in a lifetime family trip abroadlater this year.

Took the X3 out for practice filming my trail run at Bukit Silat and was so impressed with the incredibly smooth 5.7K 30fps video. Quite the learning curve coming from over a decade of working with DSLR, editing video files sends me right back to the beginning of a steep learning curve.
